How to care for your baby's first fever

Fever is common in young children. They’re a common aspect of childhood, and they’re usually harmless. They usually disappear on their own. Fever is the body’s mechanism of killing illnesses by increasing the temperature. Bacteria, such as strep throat, or viruses, such as the flu, can cause it. It is normal and natural for a baby to catch fever and therefore, nothing to be scared of. One just needs to know when a child can be tended to by oneself and when one needs to see a doctor.

Babies can be given antipyretic medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen on doctor’s recommenadation only.A sponge bath in lukewarm water may assist in lowering your child’s fever. Make sure the water does not become too cold, and remove them if they begin to shiver.

Lightly dress your youngster. Cover them in bed with a sheet rather than a blanket.

Frequently breastfeed or give your infant formula. Consider giving your baby an oral rehydration drink like Pedialyte. Encourage your youngster to drink more water after they’ve been weaned. Avoid soda and caffeinated beverages, which can dehydrate you.

Call your doctor right away if you have a baby 12 weeks of age or younger with a temperature above 100 degree celsius . For a child of any age, call your doctor right away if their temperature rises above 104, if they won’t stop crying, or has any of the following:

  • Stiff neck
  • Severe headache
  • Severe sore throat
  • Ear pain
  • Repeated vomiting or diarrhea
  • A seizure
  • Rash

You should also call your doctor if the fever has dropped but your child is still acting sick or if they seem to be getting worse.
